Deism is the belief in a God who created the Universe but who does not intervene in the destiny of that universe either through divine intervention or miracles. Deists think of God in terms of creator and first cause. They believe that this first cause is the source of universal laws but that the universal laws are derived from nature rather than through revelation. Indeed, they argued that those universal laws actually ruled out the supernatural whether that be miracle or revelation. Because of their belief that God does not intervene in the outworkings of the universe they are sometimes thought of as believing in a God who is an "absentee landlord" or a "blind watchmaker". |
