For a fairly full exposition of how the Canon was formed read
Some books now in the Bible did not easily find their place in the Scriptures. Among these was Revelation.
There were also books which had the appearance of Biblical books but were not
accepted into the canon either because they were later writings and did not
bear the evidence of inspiration necessary (eg: Clement, the Shepherd of Hermes
etc.) or because they were considered
heretical
having been written by, or widely circulated among, non-Christian or
semi-Christian sects such as the
Gnostics.
(These included books like the "Gospel of Thomas").
